FAQs

Is BetterBrain right for me?

keyboard_arrow_right
BetterBrain was designed for anyone interested in improving their brain health — both reducing dementia risk and improving cognitive function. We find that people who benefit the most typically have (1) a family history of dementia / Alzheimer's, OR (2) 1 or 2 copies of the APOE4 gene, OR (3) have been experiencing some level of cognitive decline they would like to address.

What tests do you perform?

keyboard_arrow_right
One of the first steps in your BetterBrain journey is to get a series of tests to help you identify your brain health risks. The tests included in your membership fall under two categories.

Cognitive assessments
Our battery of cognitive tests is designed to give you quick insights on different types of brain abilities - memory, reasoning, concentration, and verbal abilities. These tests have been designed based off 30+ years of research an are used by over 10,000 providers around the world. You can read more about our cognitive testing on our testing partner's website.

Blood tests
Our panel of cross-specialty physicians assembled a set of 54 biomarkers that are the most important to understand for your brain health. We test all of these markers in your initial blood panel, and re-test your most urgent markers after ~3 months at no additional cost.

Will BetterBrain help me catch Alzheimer’s early?

keyboard_arrow_right
While BetterBrain is not a diagnostic tool, it is designed to:
  • Identify key risk factors linked to a higher likelihood of developing dementia
  • Detect early biological signs of pre-clinical dementia

The blood markers that we test have been scientifically associated with increased dementia risk:

  • CRP: 2.5x increased risk
  • Homocysteine: 1.8x increased risk
  • Folate: 1.7x increased risk
  • Etc

Elevated levels, especially when combined with a family history of dementia, indicate a higher overall risk.

Additionally, our PTau blood test add-on can help detect signs of pre-clinical dementia up to 20 years before symptoms appear—offering a crucial window for proactive action.

Early detection matters. Since 1 in 2 dementia cases are preventable, identifying and addressing risk factors now can help prevent symptoms from ever developing.

How do I schedule the blood tests?

keyboard_arrow_right
As soon as you're signed up, you can schedule your mobile phlebotomy appointment, and choose between:
  • One of 2,000 LabCorp locations
  • An at-home blood draw

Your bloodwork will typically be available within a week of your blood draw. Once ready, you will receive an email to view your results directly on our platform.

A medical doctor will review results from your lab tests and call you directly if there are any critical values in your results. Additionally, your results will be interpreted directly on our app and by your health coach, who is a Registered Nurse.

The biomarkers included in our test typically incur a $1,500 out-of-pocket cost, but are included with each BetterBrain membership.

Can I get my blood re-tested?

keyboard_arrow_right
The initial blood test will almost always reveal a few sub-optimal markers (elevated blood levels of markers that correlate with an increased dementia risk). Our dementia experts will identify the most important markers to improve on and schedule a follow-up re-test at no additional cost.

How will I know that the program is working?

keyboard_arrow_right
Most of our clients see measurable improvements in their blood markers within just three months—significantly lowering biomarker levels linked to an increased risk of dementia.

To ensure your lifestyle changes are making a real impact, we offer two powerful ways to track your progress:
  • Free Blood Re-Test – We’ll re-test your most problematic markers at no cost, helping you monitor improvements and confirm that your levels are decreasing.
  • Scientific Brain Assessments – Gain access to a cutting-edge brain test backed by 25+ years of research and 300+ peer-reviewed studies. Regular assessments help you track your cognitive progress, with results displayed in your personalized brain health dashboard.

What will my personalized dementia protocol look like?

keyboard_arrow_right
There are 100+ evidence-based interventions that can help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, including:
  • Vitamin supplementation
  • Preventative diets
  • Medications
  • Clinical trials
  • Targeted exercise routines
  • Stress management techniques
  • Cognitive stimulation

However, finding the 3-5 most effective interventions for you requires a deep understanding of your unique biology. That’s why BetterBrain conducts extensive blood biomarker testing and other assessments—ensuring that your personalized plan is backed by science and tailored to your specific risk factors.

Your custom dementia prevention plan, designed by a specialist, will provide clear, actionable, and scientifically proven strategies to help you proactively manage your brain health.

What results can I expect?

keyboard_arrow_right
BetterBrain users typically see improvements in their key dementia risk markers within just three months—along with noticeable enhancements in their cognitive function.

Who are the BetterBrain dementia prevention specialists?

keyboard_arrow_right
When you join BetterBrain, you’ll receive comprehensive expert support, starting with a 75-minute consultation with a brain health specialist. Your specialist will be one of our certified experts in preventive neurology, ensuring you get science-backed, personalized guidance.

Membership also includes
unlimited texting with a dedicated health coach, who will respond within 24 hours to any questions about your protocol, test results, or overall prevention journey.

Leading our coaching team is our
Head Coach, a Registered Nurse specializing in neurology and intensive care. With experience at the Mayo Clinic and Emory University Health System, she also served as a frontline ICU nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What time commitment does BetterBrain require?

keyboard_arrow_right
Our entire assessment process typically takes under an hour (~15 min for at-home blood test, <15 min for cognitive assessment, and <10 min for the health profile). However, the real work starts post-assessment. While many interventions are quick and easy (e.g., new supplement routine), others may require more effort (e.g., optimizing sleep). That said, we work hard to ensure you find things that are enjoyable and beneficial to many other aspects of your life.

What is Ptau 217?

keyboard_arrow_right
PTau stands for phosphorylated tau. You may have heard of tau before - it’s one of the proteins that accumulates in the brain in Alzheimer’s patients. This blood test looks for a specific variety of that protein in your blood. The amount of pTau-217 in your blood is strongly associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s in your brain, even before any symptoms show. That’s why it’s such a useful tool for prevention - it can give you a sense of how far along the disease you are, and most importantly, help you make an informed choice on what prevention strategies you want to take.

Should I get tested for Ptau 217?

keyboard_arrow_right
Ptau testing allows you to detect the disease up to 20 years before symptoms start so that you have plenty of time to act to slow or stop the progression.

We believe that pTau-217 can be a highly valuable test for anyone over 45 who wants to be proactive about their brain health. However, getting tested is a very personal choice which requires careful consideration of the benefits and drawbacks, particularly since receiving a positive ptau test can be emotionally challenging.
