Advanced genetic testing with expert guidance.
The APOE4 gene is the most reliable genetic marker for dementia risk, backed by decades of research and thousands of studies. It’s directly linked to amyloid plaque buildup, tau tangles, and brain inflammation—key drivers of Alzheimer’s. Found in up to 25% of the population, its strong association with cognitive decline (up to a 20x higher risk) makes it the gold standard for genetic dementia testing.

Getting genetic results can feel overwhelming—but with BetterBrain, a dementia specialist is here to help you make sense of them. You'll receive your results in a personalized online consultation, where they’ll clearly explain what your results mean, what they imply for your brain health, and what your best next steps are.

Begin Your Prevention Journey

Uncovering a genetic risk doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Join BetterBrain’s prevention protocol to take control and actively reduce your risk.

Watching my mom decline with Alzheimer's was heartbreaking, and knowing that I am genetically at a higher risk for this awful disease scared me. BetterBrain helped me make changes in areas I didn’t even know I needed to work on. I now feel empowered to improve my health and encouraged that I’m on the right track. HIGHLY recommend.

How to interpret your results

While a specialist will go over your results with you in detail, here’s how the APOE test works to assess your risk.

No copy of APOE4
Approx. 75% of the population
No increased genetic risk for Alzheimer’s.

A negative test doesn’t necessarily preclude you from getting dementia, since half of Alzheimer’s patients are APOE4 negative (i.e., do not carry any APOE4 genes).
One copy of APOE4
Approx. 22% of the population
Risk is 2-3 times higher compared to non-carriers.

A comprehensive and rigorous prevention plan can practically eliminate the risk for single APOE4 carriers.
Two copies of APOE4
Approx. 2-3% of the population
Risk is approx. 12-20 times higher compared to non-carriers.

Prevention should be even more focused and tailored to manage and monitor the risk.

FAQs

What is the APOE4 gene and why does it matter?

keyboard_arrow_right
APOE4 is a common variant of the APOE gene, which plays a role in how the body processes fats and cholesterol. Everyone has two copies of the APOE gene—but those who inherit one or two copies of APOE4 face a significantly higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. In fact, carrying APOE4 can increase your risk by up to 20 times.

This increased risk is due to APOE4’s effects on how the brain manages cholesterol, inflammation, and waste removal—especially the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques, which are a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. These biological changes can gradually lead to memory loss, confusion, and difficulty thinking clearly.

That said, carrying APOE4 does not mean you will definitely develop dementia. Lifestyle, diet, sleep, and overall health also play a major role in how your brain ages. Understanding your APOE4 status empowers you to take preventive steps and support long-term brain health.

Does having APOE4 mean I will definitely get Alzheimer's?

keyboard_arrow_right
No, having APOE4 does not mean you will definitely develop Alzheimer’s. While APOE4 increases the risk, it does not guarantee that someone will develop the disease. Many people with APOE4 never develop Alzheimer’s, and some without APOE4 do.

Your risk depends on several factors, including:
  • How many copies of APOE4 you have (one copy raises risk moderately; two copies raise it more significantly)
  • Lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise, sleep, and mental activity.
  • Other genetic and health factors that influence brain aging.

Although APOE4 makes Alzheimer’s more likely, healthy habits can help to reduce your risk. Understanding your APOE4 status empowers you to make informed decisions and take proactive steps for lifelong brain health.

Are there benefits to knowing my APOE4 status?

keyboard_arrow_right
APOE4 status can be beneficial, especially for making informed decisions about your health and lifestyle. While APOE4 increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, it doesn’t guarantee you will develop it—and there are steps you can take to lower your risk, including joining prevention programs such as BetterBrain’s.

How can I schedule my APOE test?

keyboard_arrow_right
BetterBrain’s APOE test is in the form of a blood draw. Testing can be done at any of the 2,000 LabCorp locations across the US. In most cases (98%), you’ll be able to schedule an appointment the next day.

How will my results be delivered to me?

keyboard_arrow_right
Your results will be delivered securely through BetterBrain's online portal. You'll receive a notification when they're ready to view. The results are presented in an easy-to-understand format with clear interpretations rather than just raw data. Results will be ready within 2-4 days after the blood draw

Will I get guidance on what to do with my results?

keyboard_arrow_right

Yes. If you order the standalone APOE genetic test, we will invite you to a 15-minute consultation with a brain health expert to explain what the results mean and what you might consider to do about it. We believe anyone should be aware of dementia prevention, irrespective of genetic risk. After all, 1 in 2 Alzheimer's cases are preventable. Thats why we developed the BetterBrain check-up, a comprehensive risk assessment and personalized prevention protocol based on latest science. The BetterBrain check-up includes a 75-minute consultation.

How do you keep my health information safe?

All staff are HIPAA-trained, and they implement robust digital, physical, and administrative security measures.
